Peru has some of the most well preserved parts of the Amazon Basin and is one of the most biologically diverse places on earth.  Due to the traditional difficulties of accessing the Peruvian side of the Amazon basin, a big set of mountains called the Andes hindered access, there are relatively few inhabitants and very little development. This combined with the foresight of the Peruvian government has left large areas untouched. With the Peruvian government creating the Manu national park  in 1973, the Tambopata- Candamo National Reserve in 1990 and the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park in 1996.

These vast tracks of virgin rainforest virtually surround the Puerto Maldonado area make it probably the best place in the world for anybody who wishes to experience the Amazon Jungle at its best. Puerto Maldonado is at the confluence of two of the major tributaries of the Amazon river itself. The River Tambopata flows down from the National Reserve and the Bahuaja National park, with the Madre de Dios flowing down from the Manu National Park.

Along the banks of these rivers are many different lodges with different attributes, styles and qualities. After working with various lodges from our experience we have picked the following as they fit into our philosophy and provide a great quality of service.

Sandoval Lake lodge - sits right on the lake with its own family of giant otters, loads of monkeys, birds, caimen etc, quite luxurious for the price

Posado's Amazonas and Rufugio Amazonas - these lodges are in a more remote location a bit rustic but the wild life can be better. In the tradition of Amazonas Explorers and doing things differently they run a number of different programs including a soft adventure program and a family program.

If you prefer the luxurious then there is Reserva Amazonica - Luxurious and with a canopy walk but with less possibility of seeing some of the more exotic wildlife.

If you have time then the Tambopata Research Centre is fantastic in terms of wildlife, a long way away from any civilisation it is the most awesome experience for dedicated nature enthusiasts. Situated next to the world’s biggest Macaw lick it is an experience not to be missed. Min trip we would recommend is 5D/4N.

The ultimate experience for those dedicated wildlife life enthusiasts would be to sign up for the Amazonas Explorer Tamboapata rafting trip which runs from the head waters of the Tambopata river right down to the Research Centre before continuing onto Puerto Maldonado. Combining fantastic whitewater with the perfect wildlife watching platform we have a trip to please the heart of the adventurous nature lover.
