Lake Titicaca is the highest commercially navigable lake in the world sitting at 3810m above sea level. It is famous for the various different communities that live on different islands from Taquile and Amatani islands to the famous floating islands of Uros. The city of Puno sits on Lake Titicaca shores and the hub for most of the tourist activities that occur in this area.
You have the options of a day trip to visit the fascinating lifestyle developed on the Uros islands before continuing onto Taquile famous for the men knitting as they wander around. If you want an overnight homestay these can be arranged either staying on the island of Amantani or in the village of Llachon on the peninsular of Capachica.
Around Puno there are the pre-inca ruins of Sillustani though the main pre Inca culture prevalent was that of the Tiawanacku culture which existed immediately prior to the Inca empire and some people believe were the forefathers of the Incas themselves.
Travel to Puno is either by aeroplane, train or car. The train trip from Cusco to Puno or vice se versa has been described as one of the top 10 train journeys in the world, alternatively you can fly there via the nearest aeroport at Juliaca a one hour drive away from Puno, the drive from Cusco to Puno it is about a 7 hours.
